The Nuevo Arenal a tiny town is a must visit!
Acknowledged for its amazing natural beauty, the Arenal region of Costa Rica is a tourist hotspot with millions of visitors coming here every year. Located near the base of the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica’s most active volcano, the tiny town of Nuevo Arenal is a must visit when exploring this region. A picturesque and quaint town with close proximity to the beautiful Lake Arenal, this town is known for its breathtaking vistas and superb mountain and volcano views.
Lying some 30 minutes from the town of Tilaran on the north east side of Lake Arenal, Nuevo Arenal can also be easily accessed from the town of La Fortuna de San Carlos as well. The best way to get here is to either fly to the San Jose International Airport or the Liberia International Airport and then drive out to Nuevo Arenal. Located at an altitude of 620 meters above sea level, the weather here is great as the climate remains cool and fresh all year long.
Created in 1973 when a dam was built in the region, Nuevo Arenal came into existence when the waters of the lake rose and the former town of Arenal disappeared underwater. Built on higher safer ground, Nuevo Arenal is a small town with all the basic necessities that one needs.
Found in town are a number of banking services, a health clinic, grocery stores, mini-markets, a gas station, restaurants, hotels, resorts, bars and plenty of souvenir shops. The nightlife in Nuevo Arenal is quite active as well. When in town, do remember to stop at the German bakery for some delicious local delicacies and snacks. Also you should stop at the Gingerbread Restaurant, a really unique place, where Eyal (the Chef and Owner) With passion in all things creative in culinary and fine arts, nature and human spirit; Eyal with his staff bring generous hospitality to all that find their way to Gingerbread, THE BAR is for those looking to refresh with a cool drink, pull up a chair barside or sit back on our lounging couches and enjoy the latest sports, news, and movies via satellite TV. The selection of beers ranges from national Costa Rican varieties to imports from Belgium and Denmark. Restaurant hours are 5pm to 9pm, Tuesday through Saturday with the bar staying open later for guests. Dinner is by reservation through email or by calling 2694 0039 Every week showcases a variety of “made to order” entrees changed daily with the availability of hand selected fresh local beef and pork. For seafare fresh Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Red Snapper, Sea Bass, Jumbo Shrimp, Calamari, and the occasional Octopus are delivered to the Gingerbread the day they are caught. Freshness is the key to preparation! But don’t forget the sweets! All of the desserts are homemade with love, ranging from flavors of rich dark chocolate to fresh fruit concoctions bursting with ripeness.
For those who enjoy the outdoors, the fishing in Lake Arenal is very good, as there are plenty of Rainbow Bass and other fresh water fish found here. For the more daring, windsurfing in the lake is a great way to spend the day. With strong winds lasting from November to April, Lake Arenal attracts world class windsurfers from all over the globe. If you like, you can also take some lovely nature hikes around the lake area where you will get the chance to see various birds and animals, such as the Howler Monkeys, toucans, White Hawks and Chachalacas.
On the way out of town, do visit the lovely butterfly farm and Arenal Botanical Gardens, some 4 km east of the Nuevo Arenal. Home to a wide variety of butterflies and birds, this botanical garden has over 1200 species of tropical and rare Costa Rican plants on display including some beautiful ferns, roses and orchids.
Visitors will be astounded by the breathtaking vistas and marvelous mountain views found from this town. Thirty minutes away lies the popular and charming town of Tilaran found on the northeast side Lake Arenal. This rich region attracts nature lovers and eco tourists from all around the world.
The primary attraction here is the active Arenal Volcano; one of the top ten active volcanoes in the world. During the day visitors can take a hike through the Arenal Volcano National Park where you will walk through majestic forests and over old lava flows from 1992 that still continues to steam today. At night watch the incredible lava display from your hotel or join a night tour through the park and experience the sounds, sights and smells of the volcano from a closer perspective.
The Clear and pristine Lake Arenal is a fantastic place to go for world class windsurfing, boating, and fishing for South American Bass and Rainbow Bass. The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and pastures perfect for hiking through the varied flora and fauna as well as bird watching for parrots, hummingbirds, and toucans and animals such as Howler and White Faced Monkeys and Coatis. This natural wonderland has spectacular waterfalls and ancient caves to explore walking or on horseback.
