Fire Strikes ICE's Limón Telephone Exchange
A fire at the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) central offices telephone exchange in Limón left the greater part of the province without telephone and internet services.
The cause of the fire that destroyed the better part of the first and second floor of the downtown Limón building is yet unknown.
ICE authorities say the fixed line exchange is totally destroyed and serious damage resulted in the cellular lines exchange and the fibre optic internet cable.
Fortunately no one was hurt in the early Wednesday morning blaze, as firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control and the employees in the building at the time of the fire were able to get out safely.
Worrying authorities is the lack of emergency communications in the province and are asking the committees of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross), Bomberos (firefighters), amateur radio operators, taxi drivers and the Fuerza Pública (police) to use whatever communications system available to report emergencies.
